STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU-WAOW) – Stevens Point may no longer pursue a roundabout as part of the Business 51 Improvement Project.
The city’s Public Works Committee has voted 4-2 in favor of maintaining a signal-controlled intersection at Division Street and Fourth Avenue.
An alternative would have been placing a one-lane roundabout at that spot.
Many committee members were concerned about safety, but for some, it came down to familiarity of roundabout procedure. “Right now, the light comes on, traffic stops, pedestrians go. The light changes, pedestrians stop, traffic goes. At least there’s some order there. With a roundabout, there is nothing, [other than] yield to the left. Pedestrians are not going to go through there in a nice, orderly fashion,” said Stevens Point Mayor Mike Wiza.
Some who spoke at Monday’s meeting proposed inserting turn restrictions during certain times of day to help keep traffic flowing at a signal-controlled intersection.
The Business 51 Improvement Project is currently at the 30% design phase; it’s not clear when the design process will be fully finished.
