WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — WDEZ personalities are once again asking for your help to raise money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital through the 23rd annual Country Cares for Kids Radiothon.
WDEZ Morning Show Host Bryan Scott says the fundraiser is a big deal for him because the local donations will have a global impact. “[St. Jude] shares their information around the world because they don’t rely on grants. They rely on us to keep them moving, and donations from people throughout the world. That keeps St. Jude in business and helps get those life-saving protocols [out there.]”
During the Radiothon, listeners will be asked to become a St. Jude “Partner in Hope” by making a $19 per month contribution through their debit or credit card. Some local businesses have also promised to make matching contributions during the live broadcasts. Scott says both groups play a big part in making the event a success each year.
“Anytime we ask for help everybody steps up. Local businesses, listeners, everybody steps up,” said Scott.
The event also honors Claire Hornby, who died of a rare, inoperable brain tumor in September of 2020. Hornby’s mother will join WDEZ for the first day of the event.
Scott adds that the Hornby family is one of many who have been touched by the reach of St. Jude. That includes those who may have received treatment from the facility or received treatment from a local doctor using techniques and protocols developed at St Jude.
Last year’s event raised nearly $200,000. Scott says they never set a fundraising goal, the focus is more on making sure opportunities are there for the doctors and kids.
“We’re just trying to raise as much as we can so research can continue, so [the kid’s lives] can continue. Patients and families never receive a bill from St. Jude, it’s all paid for by donations from our community,” he added.
