WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) – In response to an alarming increase in traffic violations in the area, the Wausau Police Department is stepping up its efforts to warn the public about stopping at train crossings.
The Wausau Police Department states that it receives complaints from nearby railroad operators about cars cutting in front of trains, which can be dangerous and noisy because some crossings don’t have gates, encouraging more drivers to drive through without stopping.
The Wausau City Council has proposed gate installation on a few frequently used train tracks, including the one that crosses 17th Street. The installation of a gate may cost between $200,000 and $300,000. However, the installation will be required if the Office of the Commissioner of Railroads determines that the gate is essential, and the city may petition the commissioner for one.
