The Wausau Plan Commission will hold a public hearing on Wednesday regarding a proposal from the Woodson YMCA to raze two homes for additional parking.
The buildings, located at 404 Franklin Street, sit directly across from the Landing at the YMCA. Leaders say they need the extra space due to increases in membership for The Landing. But city staff does not recommend approval of the plan, according to agenda materials provided for Wednesday’s meeting. They are recommending that officials with the YMCA explore other options such as more shared parking spaces or adding more on-street parking along McIndoe Street. (Recommendations can be found on Page 17)
Residents are also against the plan. At least two residents submitted comments for the agenda packet against the plan. One question is if the 19 parking spaces that would be generated by the lot would be enough to fit the Y’s needs, given the rapid expansion of membership at The Landing Senior Center.
According to the Y membership at The Landing has ballooned from 3,588 in December 2021 to 5,523 last December. That represents a growth rate of nearly one thousand members per year.
Wednesday’s meeting begins at 5:00 PM. The Public Hearing is the third item on the agenda.
