CHIPPEWA FALLS, WI (WSAU) — Police in Chippewa Falls are issuing a statewide warning after two men were suspected of trying to pull off a fundraiser scam at a local bank last Thursday, February 15th.
Police say the two men went into a local bank and tried to sell candy bars to both customers and employees, providing a laminated flyer that said the money would go to mentorship programs and college scholarships through a Boys and Girls Club location in the Chicago area. When employees double-checked with the club they said they didn’t know the men.
The suspects tried to get customers to pay using digital wallets and a Square card reader. Officers didn’t say if anyone at the bank fell for the scam.
One of them gave police a fake name, and the other was identified as Chris Jefferson from Illinois.
According to the club, similar schemes have been reported in other parts of the country, prompting the statewide alert from the Chippewa Falls PD.
