LOHJA, FINLAND (WSAU) — The USA men’s junior curling team, featuring two Wausau residents and two Eau Claire residents, finished in fourth place at the World Championships in Finland.
After spotting Denmark an early 8-2 lead the Yanks rallied, outscoring the Danes 7-1 to tie the match at 9 going into the final end.
Denmark had the hammer in the 9th, meaning they had the last throw, and cashed it in for the winning point in a 10-9 result.
The win secured the bronze medal for Denmark. Norway, who beat the USA in the semifinals, went on to top Italy 7-6 for the gold medal.
The U.S. team is skipped by Wausau West graduate Wes Wendling and includes Jackson Armstrong, Wausau, who throws lead. Other members are Jackson Bestland and Caden Hebert of Eau Claire and Kevin Tuma of St. Paul.
Including group play, the team finished the Juniors with a 6-5 record.
