Will the Wausau Water Works Commission be disbanded?
That’s the question for a joint session of the Commission and City Council on Tuesday.
Both groups will meet at 6:30 PM to discuss the matter as part of a Committee of the Whole agenda. That includes a two-page memo from Mayor Katie Rosenberg discussing potential changes to the Commission. That could mean changing the makeup by reserving more seats for Alders or altering the selection criteria for residents who wish to serve.
The memo also outlines three options for replacing the commission with a committee made up of Alders. That could mean a Utility Committee, a Water Utility and Environment Committee, or a Utilities and Public Works Committee.
Mayor Rosenberg previously told WSAU News that disbanding the Commission would give the City Council more control over the water utility. She said putting the entire decision-making process on the elected officials would give residents more of a voice. “We have a lot of opportunities to discuss. We have a lot of changes that we have already put in place, so I think there is an opportunity to make sure that elected [officials] have the last say. I think that’s really what I’m hearing from people on the Council and our community. They want to make sure that they have a say, and that’s not necessarily how they feel when you have appointed citizens.”
Tuesday’s meeting is for discussion only. No action can be taken since the meeting is in a Committee of the Whole format. A live stream will be available on the city’s YouTube page.
