WASHINGTON DC (WSAU) – Voters’ concerns about President Joe Biden’s age have been described as “a very real issue” by former aides who worked closely with him during his time as VP in the Obama administration.
“When you watch Joe Biden speak, he sounds frail, and he sounds more frail than he used to, even in 2019 and 2020,” stated Jon Favreau, Obama’s former chief speechwriter on a recent episode of the podcast “Pod Save America,” according to the New York Post.
“The voice sounds frail, and he shuffles more because of the arthritis in his back,” Favreau added while also saying that Biden is also “mumbly” at times.
Another former Obama speechwriter and podcast co-host, Jon Lovett, agreed with Favreau but said that the Biden campaign should bring the president in front of the public more often to show he’s mentally well, even if they fear further embarrassing moments from him.
Former Obama senior advisor Dan Pfeiffer highlighted his fears in a separate interview, stating, “If Biden can’t assuage, particularly among his voters, in 2020, then I don’t think he can win the election—so in some ways, it’s the crux of his campaign.”
According to a recent Quinnipiac University poll released last week, more than two-thirds (67%) of respondents believe Biden is too old to serve another four years, and the latest Emerson/The Hill poll finds former President Trump is currently ahead of Biden in Wisconsin by 3 points, 2 points in Pennsylvania, 6 points in Nevada, 2 points in Michigan, 6 points in Georgia, 3 points in Arizona, and 3 points in North Carolina.
