Wausau’s Parks and Rec committee will consider a lease agreement that could bring a summer collegiate softball team to Atheltic Park.
The committee will consider a ten-year agreement with Wausau College Softball, LLC to bring a Northwoods League softball franchise to the venue next year. The team would operate much like the Wausau Woodchucks, bringing college softball players to town for the summer to play competitive games against other teams from the Northwoods League- with the season ending in a league championship tournament.
The league announced the addition of softball last spring. Woodchucks owner Mark MacDonald immediately told WSAU News he planned to bring a team to town for the second season.
Under the lease agreement, the team would play 20 games at Athletic Park, paying just under $9,400.00 for the first season. Rental fees could increase by 3% in subsequent years.
The Softball circuit debuts this summer with four teams- the Minot Honeybees, Mankato Habaneros, La Crosse Steam, and a team in Maidson. The La Crosse franchise has already announced one player signing, Oregon State’s Ashley Wolfe. The freshman from Green Bay has yet to appear in a game for the Beavers but did finish her high school career at Preble with a .530 career batting average and 70 stolen bases.
How many other Northwoods League ownership groups are considering a softball team for 2025 is unclear.
Monday’s meeting begins at 4:30 PM at City Hall.
