WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) – The Wausau School District and DC Everest School District have agreed on terms that will create a co-op lacrosse team between the districts starting this spring.
According to a press release, the new Wausau Wild boys team is currently holding informal practices this week, March 4th–8th, 7-9 p.m., at the Crystal Training Institute in Mosinee.
The newly named “Wausau Wild” boys team is already being named by some as potentially one of the top 10 teams in Wisconsin and a contender for the state lacrosse championship in June.
“I’ve been very blessed to be a part of the Wausau youth lacrosse program for a number of years before taking over as the head coach on the varsity team last year,” says Wausau Wild Coach Trevor Maki. “It’s even more of a blessing to see so many of these young men get the opportunity to play together again at the varsity level. The camaraderie and team unity started all those years ago, and I am excited to continue to watch them grow throughout the season! Wausau lacrosse has been overlooked for a long time, but it’s time for Wausau Wild to leave our mark in the history books.”
“The opportunities for local kids to play at the next level are now much more attainable and no longer limited to colleges in the Northeast,” Paul Federici, president of the Wausau Wild booster club, added in the statement.
The local lacrosse season begins with Wausau Wild’s April 2 boys’ home game at Thom Field against Pacelli United, a co-op team of schools in the Stevens Point area. The Wausau Wolfpack girls’s team schedule is still to be announced.
