STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) — The victim of Tuesday’s hit-and-run crash in Stevens Point has died.
Herbert Wievel of Stevens Point died Thursday evening as the result of his injuries. Police say he was struck by a southbound vehicle while walking along West River Drive, near the County Road HH intersection.
A passerby found Wievel unresponsive in the ditch and called for help. Medical personnel provided first aid at the scene before he was airlifted to a Wausau hospital.
Neighbors say Wievel was known to walk on River Drive during the day.
The suspect in the incident, identified as Kenneth Butler of Wisconsin Rapids, is due to make a court appearance later today. He was initially booked for hit-and-run causing great bodily harm. The charges will likely be amended later today.
