GREEN BAY, WI (WSAU) – The Green Bay Packers will be moving on from one of their top veteran defenders this week as the team continues to look for ways to create more cap space.
According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel’s Tom Silverstein, the Packers will cut former All-Pro linebacker De’Vondre Campbell this week on Wednesday in a move that will create more than $10 million in cap space and give the team more than $20 million in total cap space.
The new league calendar year begins on Wednesday at 3 p.m., and by waiting until Wednesday, Silverstein reports that the Packers can put a June 1st designation on Campbell’s release and will gain the extra salary cap room by cutting him right away.
Due to injuries, Campbell was unable to play as much as he did in his first season, missing 10 games between 22 and 23. Despite missing four games due to knee issues, he finished the regular season in 2023 with 13 regular-season games played, 96 tackles (4½ for loss), two interceptions (one returned for a touchdown), and three passes defensed.
According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, Green Bay could use that money to sign a veteran safety as other teams consider the Green Bay Packers a “threat” to sign one after he stated in a post on X that the Packers may be targeting some of the top candidates, such as Quandre Diggs, Xavier McKinney, and Kamren Curl, saying, “Green Bay is considered a threat in the safety market. It wouldn’t be a shock if the Packers comb the Xavier McKinney and Kamren Curl markets, depending on the price point. Recently released safety Quandre Diggs could also be an option.”
Green Bay may not be done after cutting Campbell, as the team is also expected to let go of left tackle David Bakhtiari or have him take a pay cut that would significantly lower his salary cap amount of $40 million. The Packers intend to free up additional cap room and would have an extra $20.95 million in cap space if they do indeed cut Bakhtiari.
