CONLEY COMMENTARY (WSAU) – Here’s another thing that Donald Trump was right about.
In 2018, Trump referred to Haiti as an “s-hole” country. Consider what’s happened there since last weekend. Haiti’s Prime Minister Ariel Henry was traveling to the United States. While he was out of the country, street gangs rose up, took over the capital, and looted most government buildings. Now Haiti’s airport is closed, and the Prime Minister can’t return home. He’s staying in Puerto Rico, as no one can assure his safety.
Mitch Album, the radio host and author, used his fortune to establish an orphanage in Haiti. He said last week that he and his staff and the orphans are trapped and cannot get safe passage to leave.
The United States has airlifted our embassy staff out of Port Au Prince. Our State Department issued a ‘do not travel’ advisory for the entire country.
This is a time to watch the Biden Administration closely because they have the tendency to want to do something.
Consider what’s happening in Gaza. Several airdrops to bring in food were blown off-course and landed in the sea. So now the U.S. military is building a pier that will allow ships to land and drop off relief supplies. This, of course, is little more than a public relations stunt. There is no distribution on the ground, so the food we bring in will not reach people in-need. It will certainly be commandeered by Hamas. When the fighting ends, we will have left behind a functioning port where all types of contraband can be smuggled in.
Shall we insert American troops into a combat zone to distribute food? Shall we blow up this port when we leave? If we won’t certainly Israel should. Imagine how many weapons will flow through the port-of-entry we are building.
The same holds true for Haiti. Armed gangs have overthrown the government there. There’s no role for American troops to play, short of getting our people out.
The situations in Haiti and Gaza are beyond the power of the United States. They are not worth the sacrifice of a single American soldier. Yet, in the days ahead, beware of the Biden Administration’s habit of the illusion of doing something.
