ROTHSCHILD, WI (WSAU) — The Village of Rothschild has been awarded more than $3 in federal earmarks to help upgrade its drinking water treatment facility.
The $3.3 million is a welcome sight to Administrator Ryan VanDeWalle, though he says it’s still unclear what the money can be used for. “It’ll depend on what the requirements are from the Federal Government- how and what we can spend it on. Right now the thought process is we can put it towards the PFAS facility.”
VanDeWalle adds that it’s also too soon to tell how the funding may impact ratepayers. “That’s a tough variable to know right now,” he added.
PFAS contamination has been discovered in many municipal drinking water sources throughout Central Wisconsin including Wausau and Weston. Wells in Rib Mountain and Marshfield have also shown high levels of the so-called forever chemicals.
Wausau Water Works is in the process of installing a granular activated carbon filtration system at its treatment plant. Other communities have installed single-well filtration systems to get their PFAS levels down.
