STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) — The Wisconsin Rapids man suspected of hitting 63-year-old Herbert Wievel as he was out for a walk earlier this month will be formally charged with his death.
Charges against Kenneth Butler have officially been upgraded to hit-and-run causing death, according to online court records. The 43-year-old is suspected of hitting Wievel near the intersection of North River Drive and County Highway HH and then fleeing the scene.
Officers say Wievel was lying in the ditch for “several hours” before a passerby noticed him. He was airlifted to a Wausau hospital in critical condition before he died on March 7th.
Butler was named as a suspect that day and initially arrested for a count of hit-and-run causing great bodily harm. Court records show the charges were upgraded on Friday.
Butler is being held on a $250,000 cash bond. If found guilty he could face up to 20 years in prison.
