MADISON, WI (WSAU) — The Wisconsin Badgers will begin their NCAA Women’s Hockey National Championship run today at home against St. Lawrence (NY) at LaBahn Arena in the regional round.
The Saints, who are primarily a Division III school but play up in both men’s and women’s hockey, outlasted Penn State 1-0 in overtime in the first round. Other first-round action had Minnesota-Duluth topping UConn and Cornell defeating Stonehill.
Other regional matchups include an all-WCHA battle between UMD and top-seeded Ohio State. The winner of that game draws the winner of Clarkson and Minnesota in the Frozen Four.
Colgate and Cornell meet in the fourth and final regional matchup.
The winner of today’s game advances to the Women’s Frozen Four in Durham, NH.
Earlier this week it was announced that Wisconsin’s Casey O’Brien and Kristen Simms have been named finalists for the Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award, which goes to the women’s hockey player of the year. It’s the first time in school history that the Badgers have had two finalists in the same season.
Cornell’s Izzy Daniel is the 3rd finalist. The winner will be announced during the Women’s Frozen Four next weekend.
