The Weston Board of Trustees will take an important second step to creating the Mountain Bay Metro Police Department on Monday evening.
They’re scheduled to approve the intergovernmental agreement for the department, which was announced on Friday in a joint news conference by both Village Administrators.
Highlights of the agreement include the creation of a seven-member Police Commission featuring four members appointed by the Village of Weston and three from Rothschild. The commission will be tasked with selecting a Chief for the new department, with the current Rothschild Police Chief Jeremy Hunt expected to be considered for the position. The department will be housed in the current Rothschild PD facility, with the EMPD building in Weston used for storage.
Around 40 sworn officers will make up the new department including all current officers in both departments. None would be cut or forced to re-apply for their job. All officers would also keep their current rank and seniority.
The agreement also calls for Weston to provide 65% of the department’s annual budget. Rothschild will provide 35%.
You can see more about the agreement in Monday’s agenda packet starting on page 202. Monday’s meeting begins at 6:00 PM at the Weston Municipal Center, and public comment is part of the agenda.
The Rothschild Village Board will consider the agreement on March 25th.
