GREEN BAY, WI (WSAU) – One of the Packers’ former anchors on defense and 2023 Walter Payton Man of the Year nominee is speaking out about his release and the issues that occurred inside the Packers locker room last season.
According to De’Vondre Campbell’s posts on X, he took issue with how the franchise decided to cut him after claiming that he was in their plans going forward, saying, “The organization didn’t even call me to ask if I wanted to take a pay cut. They just released me after going to the media and saying that Aaron Jones was part of the future plans. They could’ve just told me the truth. I could easily be bitter, but I’m not.”
Campbell also provided some behind-the-scenes details about issues he had with the former defensive coordinator Joe Barry and how he felt he was not being used correctly, saying, “You wanna know why we played better??? I started going and having private meetings with Matt (LaFleur), telling him we needed to be more aggressive. We needed more men, and we needed to blitz more. What happened when they listened to me? WE PLAYED WELL AND WON ITS NO COINCIDENCE.”
“All I know is the truth. I tried my best to help the organization win, but it’s hard to win when you aren’t willing to evolve. When my coaches aren’t willing to listen to feedback that can make us better as a team, there isn’t much I can do. All I can say is that I tried my best,” and took issue with fans who were saying he shouldn’t be posting negatively about the franchise, “Why y’all keep saying I trashed the Packers?? I never ONCE said anything negative about the organization. Best organization I’ve ever been a part of at this point but it’s some coaches I lost ALL respect for,” Campbell continued in another X post.
According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the 30-year-old former All-Pro signed a one-year contract with the San Francisco 49ers last week after dealing with injuries the last two seasons. He appeared in 40 career games with Green Bay and recorded 314 tackles, 4 interceptions, 9 passes defensed, 2 forced fumbles, 2 fumble recoveries, 2.0 sacks, and 15 tackles for loss.
The Packers are expected to replace Campbell during April’s draft after hosting former Texas A&M star linebacker Edgerrin Cooper for an official visit last week and have reported interest in former North Carolina State linebacker Peyton Wilson.
