WASHINGTON D.C. (WSAU) – Former President Trump may be back in court sooner than many think after his legal team announced a lawsuit against ABC News and their anchor George Stephanopoulos on Monday.
According to the New York Post, former president Donald Trump has launched a defamation lawsuit against the two parties, alleging that the anchor’s repeated on-air statements that he had been found guilty of raping writer E. Jean Carroll damaged his reputation.
Trump filed the complaint in federal court in Miami in response to an interview that went viral last week during an episode of “This Week” between US Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) and Stephanopoulos after he stated on air that Trump was found “liable for rape” despite the jury in his previous Manhattan civil case only finding him guilty for sexual abuse under state law.
“Judges and two separate juries have found him liable for rape and for defaming the victim of that rape. How do you square your endorsement of Donald Trump with the testimony we just saw?” Stephanopoulos asked Mace.
During a follow-up interview with Fox News’s Harris Faulkner, Mace denounced Stephanopoulos, saying he attempted to “bully” and “shame me as a rape survivor over my support for Donald Trump” during the interview and that she would not be doing any more interviews with the network.
Attorney Alejandro Brito stated in the lawsuit, “Indeed, the jury expressly found that Plaintiff (Trump) did not commit rape, and, as demonstrated below, Defendant George Stephanopoulos was aware of the jury’s finding in this regard yet still falsely stated otherwise.”
The Post further reported that the former president has requested damages be paid. However, the amount of damages Trump’s team is seeking is currently unknown.
