ANTIGO, WI (WSAU-WAOW) — The treasurer for a Langlade County Township and Fire Department is accused of funneling money from their checkbooks into his own pockets.
WAOW TV reports that Gary Kieper of Antigo is accused of taking the funds and depositing them in his personal bank accounts. The investigation started last November when a Town of Ackley board member reported irregularities in the municipal checkbook to the Langlade County Sheriff’s Office.
When investigators confirmed the irregularities, they also decided to look at the Fire Department’s books and found more missing money.
The investigation revealed more than $300,000 was stolen.
Court records show Kieper is facing multiple counts of theft in a business setting and is being held on a $500,000 cash bond. If he posts the cash he must maintain absolute sobriety, cannot possess dangerous weapons, and will be banned from managing money for others.
The 69-year-old is also facing a misdemeanor charge for operating a firearm while intoxicated, which was filed earlier this week. He returns to court for both cases on April 1st.
