MILWAUKEE, WI (WSAU) – The Milwaukee Brewers will be without one of their top players to start the 2024 season following an injury on Wednesday against the Colorado Rockies.
Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that Garrett Mitchell was scheduled for an X-ray because of swelling in his hand that hadn’t decreased during yesterday’s game. Not long after, manager Pat Murphy revealed to the media that Mitchell had a fracture in his left hand, which could take 1-2 months to heal.
This injury is the latest for Mitchell after he missed five months of the 2023 season after tearing the labrum in his left shoulder while attempting to evade a tag against the Seattle Mariners last April.
When asked by the media how this affects the team heading into opening day, Murphy said, “Not going to think about it. We’re not going to worry about what we don’t have. Worry about what we do have. Somebody will step up. I feel bad for the players. It does seem like we’re shorthanded, but I believe in the group. That’s all there is to it.”
Mitchell was expected to be Milwaukee’s starting center fielder on Thursday against the Mets, but now the team may have to turn to prospects such as Sal Frelick or Joey Weimer until Mitchell can be cleared to return.
