GREEN BAY, WI (WSAU) – As the Packers continue to work on a long-term extension for franchise quarterback Jordan Love, the franchise may be looking at starting a competition to see who will back him up this upcoming season.
According to Head Coach Matt LaFleur, the team is “excited” about what they have in Clifford after he completed 72% of his pass attempts at 6.9 yards per attempt with a touchdown and two interceptions, saying, “I’m super excited about Sean. I saw the growth in practice and the way he was able to compete against our defense,” and “he just continued to get better and better and better. He’d make some throws in practice that you didn’t always know he was capable of. There’s a reason why he started so many games at Penn State, and he’s played at a high level.”
GM Brian Gutekunst also spoke with Packers Central about the team’s depth at quarterback, saying, “I’d love to continue to bring in quarterbacks not only for the competition but for the development of them. Because I do think it takes time. It takes time for any player, but a quarterback, particularly in a comfort zone of what he’s doing, can really see his talent come out. I think Sean hit that pretty early compared to most, but I think it’s important you give that player the time to get there.”
ESPN’s Matt Miller’s most recent mock draft has the Packers selecting Tulane star quarterback Michael Pratt in the 4th round of April’s draft after Green Bay held a formal meeting with him during the NFL combine. Pratt was a four-year starter at Tulane and threw for 2,405 yards on 283 attempts with a completion percentage of 65.4%, averaging 8.5 yards per pass, and 22 touchdowns in 2023.
Other notable quarterbacks drawing the Packers’s interest include Kentucky’s Devin Leary, who met with Green Bay during the Shrine Bowl, and Oregon’s Bo Nix, who met with the Packers formally during the combine.
