CRANDON, WI (WSAU-WAOW) — Schools in Crandon will reopen on April 2nd after a carbon monoxide leak made dozens of students and staff ill earlier this month.
“We are thankful for the support of these agencies and that their investigation confirmed the integrity of the building,” said Interim District Administrator Kirby Schultz. “Ensuring the safety and well-being of our students and staff remains our top priority.”
The leak was detected on March 14th after nearly 40 students and staffers were treated for symptoms related to carbon monoxide poisoning. Leaders closed the school after the leak was detected, and have been working with investigators and response teams from across the Northwoods and Central Wisconsin to remedy the issue.
Investigators note that while the carbon monoxide levels were elevated, they did not reach “harmful” levels. Those who were hospitalized also did not show dangerous carbon monoxide levels in their blood.
The district has also installed carbon monoxide detectors throughout the building and has assigned staffers to check them daily.
