MADISON, WI (WSAU) – The Wisconsin Badgers will be bringing back one of their longest-tenured coaches in 2024.
Greg Gard, the head coach of the Wisconsin Badgers men’s basketball team, is set to return for a tenth season, according to Chris McIntosh, the athletic director at the University of Wisconsin, who spoke with the Wisconsin State Journal.
“I think Greg has a great understanding of what’s needed in the continued evaluation of our program to get there. It’s a program that’s been evolving with the times that we live in, and I’m excited about some of the things that he and I talked about for the future and the evolution of our program,” McIntosh said in the interview.
Gard is 186-107 overall as head coach and 104-70 in Big Ten play since taking over for Hall of Famer Bo Ryan halfway through the 2015-16 season. Gard has also been named conference coach of the year twice during that period.
In their last four games against lower-seeded teams in the NCAA Tournament, the Badgers under Gard have dropped three of them, including two close losses to No. 12 seeds, such as this season’s 72-61 loss to James Madison.
Wisconsin will be looking to rebuild this offseason after losing star guard A.J. Storr to the transfer portal/NBA draft and Connor Essegian to the transfer portal as well.
