MILWAUKEE, WI (WSAU) – The Milwaukee Brewers won their season opener on Friday afternoon in New York, defeating the Mets 3-1 behind top prospect Jackson Chourio’s big day.
Chourio made his big league debut on Friday, becoming the youngest player to play a game for the Brewers (20) since Robin Yount (18) in 1974. He went 1 for 3 on the day, recording his first hit, stolen base, and RBI, and led the game off with a four-pitch walk and beat out a tough ground ball in the 7th inning to prevent a double play that would’ve saved New York a run.
Meanwhile, his teammate Christian Yelich led the team offensively, going 3-4 with a solo home run in the 4th inning, which marked the first time a Brewer had that line on opening day since Carlos Gomez in 2010, and starting pitcher Freddy Peralta looked true to form, getting the win going 6 innings, allowing just one hit and striking out eight.
The Brewers will return to the diamond tomorrow for game two against the Mets. Top prospect D.L. Hall will get the start for the Brewers, while Luis Severino takes the mound for New York. The pre-game will begin at 12:10 p.m. on WSAU.
