The new Wausau City Council will meet on Tuesday to consider final approval for fencing around the Police Department parking lot.
The measure would protect officers when they aren’t prepared for confrontation. Patrol Lieutenant Luis Lopes Serrao previously told members of the Finance Committee that officers have been verbally and physically abused while going to and from their personal vehicles or performing safety and maintenance checks on squad cars. One incident that drew an audible gasp from committee members involved a person slitting their own throat after confronting an officer who was preparing to start their patrol shift.
According to the proposal, the $210,000 project would be funded through interest income from ARPA funds. If approved, construction could begin this July.
The Council will also revisit the designation of an official city newspaper, which was tabled during last week’s organizational meeting. Some Alders wanted more information about requirements for circulation, and if alternative publications could meet those criteria such as online news sources.
Materials included with Tuesday’s agenda show the Council will consider naming the Wausau Daily Herald as the official paper.
Tuesday’s meeting begins at 6:30, and public comment is part of the agenda.
