WISCONSIN RAPIDS, WI (WSAU) — Wisconsin Rapids Mayor Matt Zacher has barely moved into his new office.
But, that’s actually how he likes it.
The new Mayor says he doesn’t want to be known as the type of leader who stays hidden away in his third-floor office at City Hall. He’d rather be out making himself available to residents and businesses in the community. “I’m not used to that environment. I’m on the move, usually. I’ve always said my truck is my office,” said Zacher.
That ties into his goal of streamlining and organizing communication between himself and other city leaders and department heads. He says he wants to be as visible as possible once that system is down. “I’ll feel more comfortable going out into the community knowing that we [have tight communication] in terms of- if you need me, I’m here. If I need something, they’re there. We don’t have to be sitting in a building.”
When asked what the coolest thing in his office was, he looked around the mostly empty room and said his whiteboard.
“I have a whiteboard because I like to stay focused and know exactly where I’m going everyday. Next time you can ask me that question, maybe I’ll have something cooler,” said Zacher.
Zacher was part of the team that built Express Recycling Solutions where he worked on the operations side of the business. He will now serve a two-year term as Mayor, meaning he will be up for re-election in 2026.
