WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — A Wausau man is facing a felony count of armed robbery after police say he broke into a neighbor’s apartment in late April.
Police say Robert Carey snuck into the woman’s apartment during the early morning hours on April 24th. The woman and her son were sleeping, but she woke up after hearing a sound from the kitchen.
She came out of her bedroom and saw a man, identified as Carey, holding a knife and going through her things. Police say Carey later admitted that he intended to rob the woman.
He was arrested and made an initial appearance later that day. Judge Michael Moran has ordered him held on a $100,000 cash bond with a full no-contact order against the victim.
Charges against him carry a maximum of 40 years in prison, though more time could be tacked on because his record carries a previous conviction for armed robbery with threat of force. He served prison time and was released on probation in 2022.
The 49-year-old will make a court appearance on Friday for a review hearing. A pre-trial conference is scheduled for May 28th.
