WASHINGTON D.C (WSAU) – NATO has laid out plans that would include sending American troops into combat situations with Russian troops if Russia goes forward with alleged plans to expand the war outside of Ukraine.
According to officials who spoke to The Telegraph, the plans are being put in place in case Russian troops sweep into Italy, Greece, and Turkey, or towards Nordic countries near Russia’s border, and details state that US forces would land at one of five ports in Europe, four of which would provide access to the border with western Ukraine, while a fifth would allow them to enter Russia through Finland.
This proposed plan comes as Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke about the possibility of a “full-scale Third World War” and threatened “fatal consequences” if U.S. weapons continued to be used to attack inside Russia, which is a change of course from when Putin stated that he had “no interest'” in attacking any NATO countries and called President Joe Biden’s claims that Russia would not stop at Ukraine as ‘nonsense’.
According to Politico, Biden secretly gave the U.S. military permission in May to allow Ukrainians to use U.S. weapons to strike inside Russia last month due to Russian forces advancing toward the city of Kharkiv, which forced Ukrainian soldiers to retreat out of the area in hopes of finding “more advantageous positions” and to “preserve the lives of our servicemen and avoid losses.”
Russia’s defense ministry confirmed back in April that Russian soldiers were advancing along the front line in Ukraine, seized a village in the Donetsk region, and repelled a series of attempted Ukrainian strikes after defeating Ukrainian forces to capture the town of Avdiivka back in February.
The U.S. has been slowly moving troops into the region over the last two years, with the U.S. National Guard confirming back in 2022 that 3,000 troops from the 82nd Airborne Division had been deployed to bases in Europe, which moved the total of American boots on the ground across Europe to over 80,000. According to polling done for Newsweek by Redfield & Wilton Strategies that was completed in March, only 31% of eligible American voters favor or highly support American armed soldiers going to the front lines of Ukraine.
