MILWAUKEE, WI (WSAU) – Seeking the benefits of redistricting, Wisconsin democrats say they’re recruited candidates to run in all 16 state senate races this fall. Many of the districts are likely to be more competitive because of new voting lines that were approved earlier this year.
In the past, Democrats considered some senate districts to be non-competitive, and did not field candidates.
State Democratic Party chair Henry Winkler said increasing the party’s numbers in the legislature is one of their key goals this fall. Wisconsin Dems will also field candidates in 97 of the 99 state assembly races.
Because state senate seats are staggered, there are many senate seats that won’t go before the voters this November.
Republicans currently have a super-majority in the state senate, holding 22 of 33 seats. Republicans also have a 64-35 majority in the state assembly.
Wisconsin democrats held their state convention in Milwaukee last weekend.
