GREEN BAY, WI (WSAU) – The Green Bay Packers may be looking to add more competition to their special teams room as the team begins mandatory minicamp.
According to KPRC 2’s Aaron Wilson, the Packers, along with the Commanders, Lions, and Ravens, have requested to host USFL star kicker Jake Bates for a workout after his strong season with the Michigan Panthers, which included him hitting a record-setting 64-yard field goal this past season.
Bates, 24, was originally signed by the Houston Texans after going undrafted out of Arkansas in the 2023 NFL draft. He went 17 for 22 on field goal attempts overall and 6 for 10 on attempts over 50 yards during his time with the Panthers but did not attempt any extra points for Michigan.
The Packers currently have three kickers on the roster, including 2023 draft pick Anders Carlson, former Vikings kicker Greg Joseph, and Jack Podlesney, who used to kick at the University of Georgia. If a deal with Bates is reached, the Packers would likely waive one of the kickers on the roster, despite having an open roster spot available.
