WASHINGTON D.C. (WSAU) – The Kremlin is threatening to strike back against the U.S. after American-made missiles were allegedly used to strike a civilian center in the city of Sevastopol, killing four and injuring over 150.
According to the New York Post, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that the attack killed at least two children and that the U.S. is to blame for helping Ukrainian forces aim the missiles. Peskov further told U.S. Ambassador Lynn Tracy, based in the U.K., that the action will “not go unpunished” and that “retaliatory measures will definitely follow.”
This strike comes as tensions between the U.S. and the Kremlin remain high after Russian President Vladimir Putin made a state visit to North Korea last week to meet with the nation’s reclusive communist leader, Kim Jung Un, which resulted in a military agreement between the two nations. Putin has also greenlit several nuclear weapons tests in recent weeks to protect what he called “Russian sovereignty” and deter further “Western aggression” in the region.
Back in May, President Biden gave the U.S. military permission to assist the Ukrainian military with using American missiles to hit targets in Russian territory that may be looking at attacking Ukrainian troops, but the use of long-range missiles known as ATACMS that can strike targets 200 miles away would remain unpermitted.
Both U.S. and Ukrainian officials were not available to provide the Post with a comment at this time.
