IRMA, WI (WSAU-WAOW) — The State Department of Corrections has identified the Lincoln Hills staffer who died in Monday’s incident at the youth prison, while the suspect has been charged in adult court.
WAOW TV has confirmed that 49-year-old Corey Proulx was declared brain dead on Tuesday after he was attacked by a 16-year-old inmate at the facilities, identified as Javarius Hurd, who had just returned to the dorms after outdoor recreation time. Officials said Hurd attacked Proulx, who fell and hit his head on a concrete surface.
That incident occurred shortly after Hurd attacked a female staffer at the facility. She was treated and released for her injuries and is expected to make a full recovery. Her name was not released.
Leaders at Lincoln Hills released a statement expressing condolences to Proulx’s family: “Corey was a dedicated and compassionate member of our team, always striving to make a positive impact on the lives of the young individuals we serve. His commitment to our mission was unwavering, and he will be deeply missed by all of us.”
Hurd made a court appearance on Wednesday and was formally charged with a count of felony murder along with reckless homicide and two counts of battery by prisoners. He is being held in the Lincoln County Jail on a $100,000 cash bond. Further court action against him is pending.
Multiple agencies are investigating the incident with the Lincon County Sheriff’s Office taking the lead. The Department of Corrections, State Patrol, and Lincoln County District Attorney’s Office are also involved.
Lincoln Hills is slated for closure in the next two years and will be replaced by a new facility in the Milwaukee area.
