IRMA, WI (WSAU) – Wisconsin Representatives are weighing in on the attack at the Lincoln Hills Youth Facility earlier this week, expressing concerns and the need for more oversight to prevent these types of incidents in the future.
According to Rep. Calvin Callahan, who represents the 35th Assembly District, the death of Corey Proulx is a loss that needs to be recognized, saying, “I am saddened and angered to hear of the passing of Corey Proulx, a dedicated and loving person. My thoughts are with his friends and family, who are grieving at this time. Like you, I am outraged by this current administration’s inability to protect its employees. Now, an innocent man has been killed on their watch. This should never have happened, and I will do everything in my power as your state representative to make sure those who are responsible are held accountable. This will not stand; the staff at Lincoln Hills/Copper Lake and Corey’s friends and family have my word.”
Wisconsin 7th Congressional Rep. Tom Tiffany said in a press release that now is the time to come together, saying, “I extend my deepest condolences to the family and friends who are mourning the loss of the Lincoln Hills youth counselor. We must stand united in protecting the staff at this facility and ensuring that these incidents do not occur in the future.”
WAOW TV confirmed that Proulx was declared brain dead on Tuesday after he was attacked by a 16-year-old inmate at the facilities, identified as Javarius Hurd, who had just returned to the dorms after outdoor recreation time. Officials said Hurd attacked Proulx, who fell and hit his head on a concrete surface.
Hurd made a court appearance on Wednesday and was formally charged with a count of felony murder along with reckless homicide and two counts of battery by prisoners. He is being held in the Lincoln County Jail on a $100,000 cash bond. Further court action against him is pending.
