WAUSAU, WI (WSAU-WAOW) – If you ask anyone who knows Corey Proulx, they’ll tell you he was a generous man, and they held a ceremony at Aspirus Wausau Hospital to celebrate his last gift to others.
Proulx was taken off life support after police say he was assaulted by a student at Lincoln Hills. His loved ones announced that his organs would be donated.
Dozens of family, friends, and coworkers lined the halls at Aspirus in what’s known as an honor walk, a final send off to let the people who knew Proulx say their goodbyes, before his organs were donated.
Sarah Schroeder is a member of the Organ Donation Committee for Aspirus, and she described the scene, saying, “Seeing the line of hallways with coworkers, local law enforcement, just unbelievable to see all of that and then to come out to the flag pole and be able to raise that and come together as a community.”
Even though we won’t know where Corey’s organs are going or how many it will help, Schroeder said that one person can help dozens by donating their organs. Schroeder said, “One person can save up to 75 lives or more through solid organ and tissue and eye donation. A lot of times, we think about the solid organs like the lungs, the heart, kidneys, liver.”
Mike Porath was a close friend of Corey’s. The two shared a hobby of working on cars, and he said he wasn’t surprised at all by Corey’s generous donation, saying that’s who he always was. Porath said, “If you needed something, he was there before you needed it. I mean seriously. Good guy, good guy.”
More than 250 people attended the organ donation ceremony
