MERRILL, WI (WSAU-WAOW) – While Corey Proulx was attempting to assist another staff member at Lincoln Hills School, he was fatally attacked by a student and ultimately succumbed to his wounds and now his family is dealing with not only the grief of losing a loved one but also the cost of paying for his final resting place.
Elizabeth, his niece, had a thought. Because she was close to her uncle and he was well-liked, she found it easy to contact Los Mezcales in Merrill to set up a benefit in his honor. She remarked that although he was aware of the dangers associated with his work, his main priority was changing the world, saying, “All he had to say was, no matter what happens, my reasoning for working at this facility is because I want to at least change one person’s life. If I can do that, then I’m alright with it.”
Valeria Melendez owns Los Mezcales and collaborated with Elizabeth to arrange the fundraiser; she stated that Proulx was a cherished member of the community and that aiding his family was the least they could do, saying, “Talking to Liz, his niece, we were talking about what we could do to help out the family and him. He was such a big part of our community, so that way our community can give back a little bit.”
In addition to raffle sales, a portion of food sales also went to Proulx’s family.
