MARSHFIELD, WI (WSAU) — Marshfield Clinic Health System has reached a memo of understanding to merge with Sanford Health.
“Partnering with Sanford Health presents an incredible opportunity for our organizations to unify and establish the premier rural health system in the nation,” said Marshfield Clinic Interim CEO Brian Hoerneman, M.D. in a press release. “Together, we will ensure sustainable access to exceptional care for our communities for years to come. With a shared mission to serve, a mutual emphasis on research and education, and a strong tradition of physician leadership, Sanford Health is the ideal partner for this endeavor.”
Should the merger hold up, the combined system will bring together nearly 56,000 employees, 56 hospitals, 4,300 providers, two fully integrated health plans, specialty pharmacies, and nationally recognized research institutions. Sanford Health would serve as the parent company and the headquarters would remain in Sioux Falls. Marshfield Clinic Health System would be a region within the Sanford brand with regional leadership based in Marshfield. Marshfield Clinic would have three seats on the Sanford board of directors.
Sanford Health president and CEO Bill Gassen will serve as president and CEO of the combined system. Marshfield Clinic Health System interim CEO, Brian Hoerneman, M.D., will serve as president and CEO of the Marshfield Clinic Health System region.
The deal is expected to close within the next six months.
This isn’t the first time in recent memory that Marshfield Clinic has announced plans to merge with another Midwest-based healthcare provider. Merger plans with Essenta Health and Gundersen Health have been previously discussed but ultimately broke off.
