MILWAUKEE, WI (WSAU) – For some, the Republican National Convention has brought in lots of new customers to their restaurant or bar, but business has been slow for others so far.
Zach Dott, the General Manager of SportClub, spoke to WTMJ about sales this week, saying, “It’s been a little disappointing,” and “You’ve got a lot of people coming to town. I thought they’d make their way to all the business around.”
“I don’t think they’re in the office right now. I think a lot of people just tried to steer clear of the area,” Dott continued, as the RNC has already experienced two major security lapses, including a 21-year-old man identified as Donnell Tinsley who was arrested by Capitol Police and Milwaukee Police outside the RNC security perimeter after being seen carrying an AK-47 and a 17-year-old suspect who was arrested on Saturday and charged with stealing a Chevy Tahoe belonging to former president Donald Trump’s campaign advance team.
When asked if he’s heard from businesses about the lack of customers, Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson said he’s heard the complaints, telling WTMJ, “While it’s absolutely true that millions and millions of dollars will be spent in connection with the convention, that money is not necessarily flowing through every single corner of the economy. I’ve heard some restaurants and businesses downtown were expecting a little bit more.”
Peggy Williams-Smith, the president of Visit Milwaukee, told media outlets over the weekend that the RNC was projected to bring in around $200 million to the local economy, but what that final total will be remains to be seen as former Fox News host Tucker Carlson and former President Donald Trump are expected to take the stage at Fiserv Forum on Thursday.
