WASHINGTON D.C. (WSAU) -One of the top presidential candidates this cycle says his candidacy is nowhere near over after rumors surfaced that his campaign could be in its final days.
According to the New York Post, despite reports that he was thinking of shelving his candidacy and supporting Republican rival Donald Trump, independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. declared on Friday that he is going to continue with his 2024 campaign in a statement on X, saying, “I’m in it to win it. I lead in popularity, and independents are now the largest voting bloc. Momentum is shifting in my favor as I close in on ballot access in all 50 states.”
“I look forward to challenging President Trump and the DNC nominee at the next debate,” Kennedy Jr. continued.
These rumors began following a phone conversation that occurred earlier this month in which the independent candidate and Trump reportedly talked about Kennedy Jr. holding a health-related cabinet role in the Trump administration, according to the Washington Post.
The latest New York Times/Siena poll shows Kennedy Jr. polling at just 5% with Trump ahead of Vice President Kamala Harris by one percentage point, with voters who did not vote in 2020 supporting Trump by thirteen percentage points, and independent voters supporting Harris by two percentage points.
