HUDSON, WI (WSAU) — The man who stabbed a group of tubers on the Apple River in St. Croix County back in 2022, killing one, will serve 20 years in prison.
Nicolae Miu was sentenced on Wednesday in a Hudson courtroom. He’ll also serve six years on extended supervision and pay fines.
The incident left a bloody scene on the river after Miu stabbed a group as they were floating by him on the river. Miu, who took the stand during the week-long trial earlier this year, said he swung the knife in self-defense because the group was shouting at him as he was looking for a cell phone in the bottom of the river.
However, jurors determined that Miu was the aggressor in the July 2022 incident and could have backed off at any time.
Miu was also handed a full no-contact order against the family of the deceased victim, identified as 17-year-old Isaac Schuman. Four other victims survived the attack including one who testified during the trial. They were from both Wisconsin and Minnesota.

He was initially charged with intentional homicide, which carries a mandatory life sentence. The jury found him guilty of a lesser charge of reckless homicide.
The 54-year-old was given credit for just over two years already served in jail while awaiting trial.
