SCHOFIELD, WI (WSAU) – The D.C. Everest School District welcomed community members and students on Thursday to the grand opening of their new athletic facility, known as the Greenheck Turner Community Center.
According to a press release from the district, the new 135,000-square-foot building includes indoor walking lanes, 2 sports simulators, batting cages, and 4 indoor turf fields with bleacher seating, which adds to the current 3 basketball courts, 2 racquetball courts, a large fitness center, a group fitness studio, and an ice arena for hockey and skating.
D.C. Everest Superintendent Dr. Casey Nye spoke about the opening and what it means for the community, saying, “We’ve had support from across the region, and our donors have made it known that they want this to be something that’s for our entire community. We’re excited to be the facilitators of it and have it here for our families and kids.”
The facility, which is around the size of Rhinelander’s Hodag Dome (128,000 sq feet), will play host to many different sports leagues in the area, such as D.C. Everest hockey at the new Olympic-sized ice rink, which can hold up to 1,3500 fans and will be crucial during the cold winter months during the winter and spring seasons, as many high school sports teams practice indoors, including soccer, softball, baseball, and track.
Resident Scott Spear says the facility will provide student-athletes with lots of new opportunities, saying, “I think it’s a great facility; they went above and beyond what I expected when they started the building, and it’s great for all kids who play in different sports here.He continued by saying the facility is very different from when he played hockey for the school back in 1980, saying, “Our hockey rink was right where I’m standing, and it”was outside, so I went from skating outside with my high school team to a beautiful world-class facility.”
Fitness Memberships are available to everyone, regardless of residence. Memberships can be bought online. During normal business hours, membership cards and door access can be obtained from the front desk, located in the lobby. Adults 65 and older may be eligible for a free membership through select Medicare programs.
