ADAMS COUNTY, WI (WSAU-WAOW) – On Wednesday, VFW Post 6274 in Adams County was a hive of activity as one of their own finally got the respect they truly deserved.
In recognition of his heroic service, US Army veteran Lawrence McCann received a bronze star from U.S. Congressman and former Navy Seal Derrick Van Orden and Wisconsin State Senator Pat Testin, who offered McCann praise for his service, saying, “Mr. McCann served his country in the Vietnam War honorably, and he earned the bronze star, so this is something that he can show to his family.”
“We have to understand that when men and women serve our country honorably, we owe that thanks to them in perpetuity. We don’t shake your hand, pat ’em on the back, say happy Veteran’s Day, and then walk out of the VFW; we owe them the respect that they’ve earned for a lifetime,” Van Orden continued.
Those who, while serving in any capacity with the US Armed Forces in a combat zone, distinguish themselves by bravery, exceptional achievement, or meritorious service that does not require aerial flight may be granted the Bronze Star Medal. During the Vietnam War, over 100,000 Bronze Stars were awarded to U.S. veterans while only 21,630 Bronze Stars with Valor were given.
