MADISON, WI (WSAU) – Former Heisman Trophy winner and current Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams spoke for the first time about how close he was to committing to the Badgers after leaving Oklahoma for USC in 2022.
Williams addressed the rumors during an interview with the popular Barstool’s Sports podcast Pardon My Take saying it all started with having a conversation with a friend, “My best friend Dean Engram was at Wisconsin, and his dad [Bobby Engram] was a coach. So we reached out to them. We were trying to just get the vibe and see what was going on and how it was up there. Somehow it caught wind that I was in contact with them. I’m consistently in contact with those two because I’ve grown up with them.”
“Somehow it caught wind, and it blew up on Instagram. But it wasn’t too huge. It was never too crazy,” Williams continued.
After winning the Heisman Trophy while attending USC in 2022, Williams was chosen first overall in the 2024 draft. In contrast, Wisconsin dismissed head coach Paul Chryst after just five games in the 2022 season, resulting in former defensive coordinator Jim Leonard being given the interim job and the team sticking with former quarterback Graham Mertz who started 12 games, throwing for 2,136 yards, 19 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions.
