GREEN BAY, WI (WSAU) – Following the Packers 30-7 win over the Baltimore Ravens on Saturday, head coach Matt LaFleur did not provide much information on who has the upper hand in the battle to be Jordan Love’s backup and the team’s starting kicker.
According to LaFleur, who spoke to the media following the preseason finale, inconsistency from both Anders Carlson and Greg Joseph has been an issue, saying, “We have a really good sample size, and then we’ll see what happens just around the league. There was some good moments. Both of those guys made a 50-yarder, and then there was a poor moment where we missed a chip shot. A lot of good, but there was some we could be better at. We’ll just wait to see.”
Carlson and Greg Joseph started by making their first six kicks — including two field goals over 50 yards—but Carlson ended the game on Saturday with a miss on a 32-yarder.
Meanwhile, Sean Clifford and Michael Pratt had mixed days on Saturday that included both throwing touchdown passes, but when asked if LaFleur believed the team has a quarterback who could step in if Love were to suffer an injury, he said only time will tell. “We’ll see. Again, similar to the kicking competition, there was some really good moments and there was some things that we absolutely have to do better. And we’ll evaluate everything that is out there for us.”
In their combined performance against the Ravens, Clifford and Pratt completed 14 of 26 passes for 133 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. At halftime, Clifford was just 3-of-10 passing while Pratt threw a third-quarter interception to linebacker Trenton Simpson.
Players will take Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday off, according to LaFleur. Tuesday is the day for final cuts as the team looks to trim the roster down from 90 players to 53.
