TOWN OF BELLE PLAINE, WI (WSAU) — A Gresham man was rescued from his vehicle after an early-morning crash on Highway 29 in Shawano County Wednesday morning.
The unidentified driver slid off the highway at a bridge along the Wolf River, missing a guardrail and ending in the water. The man, who was not identified, spent hours calling for help but the area was secluded from view and no one could hear him.
Finally, at around 8:40 AM a fisherman found the vehicle and called for help. First responders removed him from the vehicle and sent him down the river to a more accessible location in a boat. From there he was taken by ambulance to a local hospital.
Crews then shut down the westbound lanes of Highway 29 to remove the vehicle from the water. That closure lasted for several hours.
An update on the man’s condition has not been provided.
