MADISON, WI (WSAU) — Rushing touchdowns from Tyler Van Dyke, Chez Mellusi, and Tawee Walker lifted the Badgers to a 28-14 win over Western Michigan to open the 2024 College Football season in Madison.
Mellusi opened the scoring on a nine-yard scamper in the second quarter to cap a 16-play, 93-yard drive. The Broncos responded with a 16-play drive of their own on the next possession to tie the game.
Wisconsin’s first drive of the game also went 16 plays but the Badgers came up empty.
Nathanial Vakos nailed a 33-yard field goal as the first half expired to give Wisconsin a 10-7 lead. He connected again from 23 yards out in the 3rd.
Walker and Van Dyke both recorded six-yard touchdown runs in the 4th to put the game out of reach.
Van Dyke, the former ACC rookie of the year at Miami, completed 21 passes for 192 yards. He did not record a touchdown or an interception in his Badger debut. Mellusi led a balanced rushing attack with 74 yards and one score.
Hunter Woler and Nyzier Fourqurean each recorded seven tackles.
Wisconsin (1-0, 0-0 Big Ten) hosts the University of South Dakota on September 7th at Camp Randall. Pregame coverage will begin at 12:30 on WSAU with kickoff at 2:30. Western Michigan (0-1, 0-0 MAC) will stay in the Big Ten with a visit to Ohio State next weekend.
