WASHINGTON D.C. (WSAU) – The husband of Vice President Kamala Harris is responding to a report that he assaulted his ex-girlfriend at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival in France.
According to the Daily Mail, which broke the story on Wednesday, Emhoff allegedly slapped his then-girlfriend after he believed she was flirting with a valet employee outside of a club. The outlet cites three friends of the unidentified woman, who was described as a “successful New York attorney.” The friends provided photos and other forms of proof that Emhoff and the woman did date and also attest that Emhoff had struck her so hard that she “spun around.”
The woman allegedly called one of them “sobbing” afterward, saying, “It was very clear what she was telling me. She said she was with a guy, her date; she was at the Cannes Film Festival, and he hit her. She was in the car with the guy at the time.” The friend said and continued saying, “I didn’t know what to do; I didn’t know whether to call the French police. I couldn’t get ahold of her after calling back.”
In a short statement to Semafor, a spokesperson for Emhoff spoke about the alleged incident, saying, “This report is untrue; any suggestion that he would or ever hit a woman is false.”
Vice President Harris and Emhoff began dating around a year after the incident allegedly occurred, and her campaign has not responded to comment requests from the Daily Mail about the matter.
This is not the first story that the Second Gentleman has been involved in this summer, as the Daily Mail previously reported in August that he had cheated on his first wife with one of his daughter’s elementary school teachers, which resulted in a pregnancy and ended with Emhoff encouraging her to get an abortion. The teacher did not return requests to comment, but two friends who are close to her told the outlet that she did not keep the child.
