MILWAUKEE, WI (WSAU) – Brewers closer Devin Williams may have been giving the New York Mets too much information about his pitches before the Mets came back and eliminated Milwaukee from the playoffs.
The New York Post reported on Friday morning that a breakdown by Jomboy Media, which former Twins infielder and Jomboy Media analyst Trevor Plouffe confirmed, demonstrates that Williams holds his glove slightly differently when delivering his fastball and changeup. This could have given Alonso the narrow window of opportunity he needed to hit the game-winning home run.
Williams threw 17 fastballs or four-seamers and 17 changeups in the 9th inning of Thursday’s Game Three loss, and Jomboy points to his right hand seemed to be deeper in his glove during his fastball throw than it did during his changeup, and his glove seemed to be closer to his face. For his changeup, the glove also seemed flatter.
Pete Alonso was seen talking to Mets hitting coach Jeremy Barnes before his at-bat, and it seemed like Barnes was telling Alonso, “That’s the changeup,” and then Alonso appeared to say, “I gotcha.”
Williams credited Alonso with the hit, saying it was a “good piece of hitting,” and took the blame for the loss during his post-game interview, saying, “Everyone did their job except me. I feel like I let everyone down.”
The Mets will now move on to the NLDS against the Philadelphia Phillies beginning on Saturday afternoon.
