FRIENDSHIP, WI (WSAU-WAOW) – Fire crews are battling a 6.5-acre wildfire at Roche-A-Cri State Park in Adams County but say they have it contained.
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and 10 local fire departments have been out since Sunday when the so-called ‘Stairway Fire’ fire began. Officials say the fire started at the top of the Roche-A-Cri Mound stairway around 3:30 p.m. on October 6.
No injuries have been reported. Investigators are still trying to determine what caused the wildfire to start.
The DNR says the fire is burning in pine needles and leaf litter and has done minimal damage to trees so far. The stairway has been damaged.
The park’s main gate is closed for the season. The DNR says the property is closed to the public until further notice.
The Nature Conservancy and the UW-Stevens Point Fire Crew are currently assisting with mop-up. They will continue to look for smoke and burning materials within the fire perimeter.
