WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — A ribbon cutting will be held on Saturday to celebrate a new designation for the greater Wausau area.
The Ice Age Trail Alliance will welcome Wausau as the 23rd designated community along the 1200-mile course. Visit Wausau CVB Executive Director Tim White says this means Wausau-area businesses will be featured for those planning to hike the trail.
“The publication, promotion, and marketing that the Ice Age Trail does nationally and internationally [means] our merchants and our stakeholders will get that great exposure,” said White.
White says an estimated two million people take in a segment of the trail annually. About 40 miles of trail runs through Marathon County.
Saturday’s event runs from 4:30 to 6 PM at Timekeeper Distillery with the ribbon cutting at 5:00. White says several local business leaders and officials from the Ice Age Trail Alliance will be on hand. The official Ice Age Trail Mascot, a costumed woolly mammoth, will also be on hand.
Wausau joins other Central Wisconsin communities like Rib Lake, Hatley, Antigo, and Merrill on the designated community roster.
White also notes that several businesses are already displaying the Ice Age Trail Community stickers on their windows.
